Kate had loved snow since... well, forever.
She often referred to her longest relationship
as the one that she has with snow.
Oh, sure, she knew all of the perils and hassles that come with the white flakes
that fell from the sky - shovelling snow? not so fun. Getting snow tires? Also not fun. - but there was still something so
magical about the whips that caressed her face as they fell.
She remembers early childhood years spent watching her
brothers in their snow fights. Seeing them build their monstrous snowmen. She remembers the sadness at being too little to
play and then - finally! - she was old enough and big enough and she joined in with the snow fights. She had developed the
ability to throw a mean snowball before she was ten.
Her first kiss happened when it was snowing. Cole Johnstone had
been walking her home - was she fourteen or fifteen? - and he'd told her that he liked her. When they'd reached her front
gate, the snow piled up around them in various lumps, he'd kissed her.
It had also been snowing when she lost her virginity,
but neither Kate nor Cole had been all that interested in what was going on outside at that point.
She'd got her driver's
license when it was snowing. How she made that three point turn with those weather conditions was still a mystery to her.
It
had been snowing when she got her first apartment and it had been snowing when she'd been offered the Secret Service detail
for the President.
So many milestones that all contributed to her eternal love for the white heaven that fell from
the sky a few months a year.
Gibbs, apparently, didn't feel the same way.
"God damn snow!"
Kate frowned
and looked at Tony. "Is he OK?"
"He is..." Tony flinched when Gibbs kicked snow around as he walked. "Not a winter
bunny."
"What did you say, DiNozzo?"
Kate watched with some measure of interest as Tony's face lost all of its
colour.
"Just commenting on how I should be working and not standing around talking, Boss."
"Get moving."
Tony
moved off to start sketching and Kate shrugged at McGee’s confused look - he'd learn to deal with this kind of thing
soon enough - before following Gibbs.
They worked in silence for a good hour with him pointing out things and her photographing
them before Kate worked up the nerve to speak. "Why do you hate snow so much?"
He didn't answer, instead moving to
pick something up and examine it closely.
"Gibbs?"
"It ruins our crime scenes." He muttered distractedly. "Photo."
She
took the shot. "But it's pretty."
"It's wet and cold, Kate."
"It's romantic." She countered.
Gibbs stood
from his crouched position and glared at her. "What is romantic about having wet socks?"
Kate
really didn't
understand him sometimes. "How can you not see snow as magical?"
"Did I mention the wet socks?"
"You did."
"And
the ruining of our crime scene?"
"You mentioned that too."
"And you still think snow is magical?"
"Yes."
She took a few steps towards him, enjoying the crunching sound beneath her feet as she made contact with the crisp, white
snow. "I don't understand how you don't love it. I got my big break in the secret service when it was snowing. I got my first
apartment when it was snowing. My first kiss. I lost my vir-"
He kissed her.
It was probably to shut her up.
The
kiss was little more than a meeting of closed mouths, but she still shuddered. The visor of her standard issue NCIS cap was
hitting him in the forehead and the angle was all wrong, but the kiss only lasted a few seconds before he broke it off.
When
he pulled back, she blinked at him as he removed her cap and put it on backwards.
"My boss kissed me in the snow."
She added to her list before moving forward again.
This time, his hand moved around her waist, pulling her close to
him while the other moved to half cup her cheek and neck.
Kate moaned.
The sound opened her mouth under his
and he took full advantage of it. His lips and tongue worked her over in tandem, teasing and tasting and assaulting her senses.
He
tasted - unsurprisingly - like coffee, but there was something else that lurked beneath the caffeinated flavour and it took
her almost half a minute to realize that it was
him that she could taste.
When they both pulled back for air,
he watched her carefully.
"I kissed my boss in the snow." She told him breathlessly. Another thing for her milestone
list. "And I plan to proposition him in it, too."
Gibbs hadn't let her go, their bodies still pressed together and
when he replied, she could feel it coming from his chest.
"Your boss will not have sex with you in the snow."
Kate
could feel a telltale hardness against her belly and she grinned at him, sending a silent thank you to her white friend as
it surrounded her. "Are you sure about that?"
