“You would not think, to look at me, that I was a dangerous alien who attacked and destroyed thousands of people.”

Well, that was an effective greeting.

He eyed the very large – and rather scary looking – man in front of him, shaking his hand tentatively. “I’m a Detective… does that count?”

“No.”

Ohhhhh-kaaaaaay.

“Hi. Daniel Jackson.”

Pete shook the next hand offered to him. “Were you a Storm trooper?”

Daniel coughed politely. “Ah, no. I’m an Archeologist. They don’t actually exist, by the way.”

After everything that he had learnt from being with Sam in the last few hours, Pete wasn’t sure what was real anymore. “Nice to meet you.”

Sam was standing next to his bed, one hand on his back and an amused expression on her face.

The third man in front of him didn’t offer his hand. Or a pleasant facial expression, for that matter. “Hurt her and they’ll never find the body.”

“I… excuse me?”

“Would you like me to repeat it?”

“Uh… no.”

“Don’t think I’m kidding.”

Pete wasn’t sure that this man even knew what a joke was. He’d seen all three of them before, at Daniel’s apartment, and when he’d first been brought to the infirmary, but this was their first real introduction that they’d had.

It didn’t appear to be going well.

Deciding that civility was best, Pete held his hand out. “Pete Shanahan.”

No hand was offered in return. “Jack O’Neill. Carter’s boss. I see her everyday, you hurt her, we’ll know and we will kill you.”

“Sir…”

“I’m just sayin’”

There was something in the way that this man – her boss – looked at him that unnerved Pete. But there was something completely different in the way he looked at Sam that unnerved him even more.

He wasn’t blind, he could see that there was something there. Something between them that she didn’t share with the other two members of her team. History, he supposed would be a good word for it.

Feelings would also qualify.

Ignoring the sinking feeling in his stomach, Pete eyes the three men standing before him, in identical positions, hands behind their backs.

Levity usually worked on a tough crowd. “So… this is awkward.”

“Indeed.” Was that a joke? Was… Teal’c telling some sort of alien joke that he wasn’t privy to?

“We should go.” The others appeared to agree with O’Neill in some form of silent communication that he couldn’t possibly understand. “Just… remember what I said.”

“Sure.”

Sam waited until they’d left the room before saying anything. “That went well.”

What? Was she serious? “You think?”

“Sure, Teal’c didn’t offer any demonstrations of his former life, Daniel didn’t give you a lecture about history and Colonel O’Neill only threatened you twice. I think it went great.”

“If you say so…”

She smiled.

“There’s something there, isn’t there?”

“We’ve been through a lot together as a team, of course we have something between us.”

“I meant with you and O’Neill.”

“Pete…”

He could see, clearly, that it wasn’t a comfortable subject for her to be discussing with him. Which was fine, now probably wasn’t the time or place to push the issue.

“You really think it went well?”

“Of course.”

Pete got the feeling that he wouldn’t be invited to any team bonding days any time soon, but he was ok with that. He also got the feeling that he had just entered into some competition in O’Neill that he didn’t understand, but her was ok with that too.

He got the girl.

For now.
